Data centres are among the most advanced buildings in the modern real estate landscape – engineered for performance, resilience and scale. Yet behind the infrastructure sits a quieter, often overlooked layer: the spaces designed for people.
This guide explores how the human layer is beginning to shift from an afterthought to a critical component of operational performance. Drawing on insights from a roundtable hosted by Agilité, it brings together perspectives from architecture, engineering, programme delivery and fit-out.
From security and spatial planning to workplace design and delivery, the discussion challenges the idea that offices within data centres are simply “what’s left”. Here, we position them as part of the system itself – influencing focus, decision-making and performance in mission-critical environments.
Inside the guide
Contributors
This discussion was shaped by a group of practitioners working at the forefront of data centre design and delivery across the UK and Europe. Hosted by Daniel Hunt and Galia Minkara, country heads at Agilité, the roundtable brought together Adrian Brewin, co-founder of Reid Brewin Architects; Tiaan Alberts, project director at Turner & Townsend alinea; and Phil Garbutt, managing director and co-founder at design box.
Drawing on experience spanning architecture, engineering, programme delivery and fit-out, the conversation explores how highly technical environments are increasingly being challenged to respond not just to systems and infrastructure, but to the people who operate, secure and experience them every day.
Explore how data centre design is evolving – and why the human layer is becoming a defining factor in performance.
