This month, we’re shining a light on Optimising IT, a UK technology and IT services provider supporting ambitious B Corp businesses. In a sector not always associated with sustainability and social impact, the team is quietly – and impressively – changing the narrative. Its philosophy is simple: do the right thing, all the time, every time.

We caught up Todd Gifford, managing director at Optimising IT, to hear how they put that into practice.

For readers who might not know you yet, tell us – in a nutshell — who you are, what you do, and what makes your business unique?

We are Optimising IT. We provide technology and services to ambitious B Corp businesses across the UK – from everyday IT support to cybersecurity, data insight and AI-driven growth.

What inspired you to pursue B Corp certification, and what does being part of the community mean to your organisation?

B Corp certification very much is a demonstration of who we are as people and how we conduct business.  It's core to our everyday mantra 'do the right thing'.  We apply that to the team, our customers, our environment and our local communities.

Certification isn’t the end point – it’s the beginning of continuous improvement. How do you approach that in your day-to-day role/business operations?

Continuous improvement is embedded across the team. We ask everyone to make one improvement each month – which, at our size, results in over 400 improvements every year across accountability, sustainability and service delivery.

What’s one initiative, project, or policy you’re especially proud of that’s helping to create a more sustainable or equitable business?

We’re working towards zero direct emissions and prioritise pre-loved equipment where possible – such as chairs and desks in the office. To date, we’ve planted over 20,000 trees and avoided nearly 2,000 tonnes of CO through green energy projects in places like Brazil.

Have you faced any challenges on your sustainability journey, and how have you overcome them?

The team and our customers have embraced being sustainable, we work with some great people!

Looking ahead, what’s one area of focus or innovation you’re excited about for the future of your business?

We are currently working on how we can encourage our customers to do more for people and planet, and are working on adding social focus to our offer.

Collaboration is key in driving change. Are there any partnerships, campaigns, or communities that have been particularly valuable for you?

We are very involved with the B Locals near our offices, as well as getting stuck into tree and working with Ecologi.

What other organisations/B Corps do you admire, and why?

Any business that goes through certification deserves a mention, but we have to put a massive shoutout to our first ever B Corp customer, Vivobarefoot, not least for the encouragement to go through the certification process.

If another company is considering becoming a B Corp, what advice would you give them before starting the process?

Speak to other B Corps.  We are all super friendly, and will happily offer some time to talk through the process, timelines, the community and more.

And finally, what does being a “better business” mean to you personally?

For me, it's right back to 'do the right thing'.  All the time, every time.
