One of the key things we pride ourselves on at Agilité is our local teams – colleagues that are brimming with knowledge of the neighbourhoods they are working in. But, one thing we also have going for us, is a breadth of real-world experience gathered on sites across Europe. From architects to structural engineers, we have a team that comprises our sector’s leading lights – including some that have come ‘from the other side of the fence’.

Sara Purvis, Agilité’s country head in Germany, spent several years’ client-side before joining the team earlier this year – and it’s this insider knowledge that helps us continue to raise the bar as we expand throughout the continent. Sara knows what clients want from their general contractor partners, as well as what it takes to go above and beyond – fostering long-term partnerships and repeat business. Here, she explains some of the key things to look for when it comes to selecting your next GC.

There’s no escaping the fact that every project will encounter the occasional challenge, but the difference between a good and great delivery lies in the general contractor pushing things forwards behind the scenes. Personally, I’ve been on the receiving end of both excellent and, frankly, disappointing contractor performance and there are certainly a few things I learnt to look out for before I ‘swapped sides’.

1. Plan for completion from the start

general contractor plan from start to finish

It sounds obvious, but a surprising number of contractors treat project completion as something of an afterthought. I've been in the unfortunate position of walking into a newly ‘completed’ office only to find cables coiled under sofas, holes left unsealed in meeting room walls, and completion documents missing entirely. The space may have been presented as ‘finished’, but for the client, it was anything but.

If completion isn’t embedded into the mindset from day one, it will never be truly achieved – and it’s about more than just physical finish, too. Ensuring that everything, from snags to inspection certificates, is in hand before the handover is important so check there’s a plan for that because, let’s be honest, the memory of a painful, drawn-out snagging process lingers far longer than any earlier success on site.

2. Agree a clear reporting and meeting schedule

As a client, you can’t be on site every day/week – and might be based in a completely different country – but you still want to feel informed every step of the way. Ask your general contractor to share the plan, method and cadence of meetings and reporting – whether it’s a simple weekly update or a detailed monthly breakdown – prior to appointment.

Look out for the reporting plan to be supported by tools such as Procore or HoloBuilder, as they will allow you to virtually walk the site wherever you are – and it’s a game-changer in terms of knowing you’ll be kept informed, in control and able to catch potential issues early.

3. Make sure they speak your language – literally

It may sound small, but it’s hugely important: can your contractor’s site team speak your language? Local teams are great for on-the-ground knowledge, but I’ve lost count of how many times I was promised English-speaking staff in a tender interview, only to discover that the key site contacts couldn’t communicate effectively with our international team.

This isn’t about cultural bias – it’s about communication. If your designer flies in for a site walk and can’t ask a simple question, delays are inevitable. Look for a contractor who can provide not just an English-speaking point of contact, but someone who is present and empowered to make decisions on site – ask for their CVs to be included with their tender proposal, with languages spoken clearly outlined.

4. Attention to detail – and the initiative to act on it

reporting for GC

Some contractors are excellent at delivering the big picture, but it’s often the small details that make or break a project. I’ve seen beautifully designed spaces undermined by inconsistent finishes or missing elements that were never flagged – usually because the contractor failed to ask a question or check a spec.

Take, for example, a high-end kitchen fit-out where everything looked perfect – except for the missing tap. The sink was there, the hole for the tap was there, but no one had raised the issue, ‘who supplies the tap?’ and we only discovered it close to handover. A quick query during installation could’ve saved a lot of stress and delay. It’s the same story when design details haven’t been fully resolved. I’ve walked into spaces with raw, unfinished plasterboard edges where a feature should have been – simply because the contractor didn’t raise the ambiguity.

Problems will always come up on site, but what separates a good contractor from a great one is their willingness to take ownership. Rather than waiting for instructions or brushing off the issue as not their problem, the best contractors propose practical, timely solutions. It shows a commitment not just to the job, but to the client – and that mindset makes all the difference, particularly when to comes to the next project you’re looking to deliver.

When your shortlisted contractors send over a list of case studies, as for them to share any lessons learned, problem-solving examples or challenges during the delivery – this transparency is important. Look for testimonials from clients or the opportunity to speak to them directly.

5. Can you actually see yourself working with them?

This last point might sound intangible, but it really matters. When you’re selecting a general contractor, you’re not just buying a service – you’re choosing a partner, an extension of your own team. You’ll be working together closely for months, often under pressure, and you want to know you’re aligned.

I’ve had clients tell me the reason we won a project was simply because; “we could see ourselves working with your team.” That mutual trust, likability, and openness goes a long way – especially when navigating challenges.

We know from experience, the best outcomes come from collaboration. And while it’s tempting to make decisions based on price or programme alone, I’d always recommend digging a little deeper. Ask how your contractor will communicate. What systems they’ll use. Who you’ll be working with day to day. And whether they’re willing to roll up their sleeves and solve problems with you. Because when you find a team that does all that – and delivers the quality and service you expect – you’ll know you’ve made the right choice.

Now the dust has settled on another busy Clerkenwell Design Week 2025 (CDW), we’ve been reflecting on some of the highlights from last month’s festival – which has once again solidified its reputation as a premier event in the design world, showcasing cutting-edge trends that are shaping the future of commercial interiors.

With Agilité’s office in the heart of the action, and over 15 venues and 160 local design showrooms open to visit, we made the most of a packed schedule of product launches, installations, exhibitions, talks and workshops. From sustainable innovations to sensory-focused designs, this year's event provided plenty of food for thought, and here are some of our key takeaways:

1. Responsibility takes centre stage

Environmental consciousness was a dominant theme at CDW 2025 – and something we spent a lot of time discussing with the various exhibitors dotted around the neighbourhood. A standout launch came from Mirfield (Yorkshire) brand, Camira, choosing the United Nations’ International Day of Zero Waste to unveil ‘Lucia T2T’ – a new recycled polyester made entirely from 100% textile-to-textile (T2T) waste, in a bid to address the growing, global textile waste crisis and promote a circular approach to textile design. A shout-out too to Mater, which showcased its Ocean furniture line – made from upcycled fishing nets and ocean plastic waste – opening the doors to its St John Street showroom to display the waste streams used in the production of its chairs.

2. A closer look at sustainable sampling

In years gone by, we’ve been no stranger to collecting our fair share of product samples – which often end up on a shelf or storage cupboard in the office. The shift to more responsible methods of sampling, from the likes of CDW sponsors Material Bank and Swatchbox, has been a welcome step in the right direction, and it was good to discover more about both brands during our tour of the city. We joined Swatchbox’s talk, ‘from waste to resource - rethinking samples in design’ to hear how the brand – along with CD (UK) Ltd and The Ethical Stone Company are tackling material waste and disorganised sample libraries, including the development of circular solutions from excess materials.

3. Emphasis on sensory and inclusive design

We know from our work across the retail, office and hospitality sectors, that brands are increasingly prioritising the sensory experience of their spaces. Furniture manufacturer Sixteen3, in collaboration with Crown Paints, transformed its showroom into an interactive space exploring neuroscience, accessibility, and inclusivity in interior design. On a much larger scale, as the winner of Dezeen’s Shaping Water competition, architect Arthur Mamou-Mani’s ‘Harmonic Tides’ installation at St John's Gate created an immersive ‘water corridor’ allowing for a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the event. Yes, we admit, we spent quite a few minutes there, drinking in the calm.

4. Integration of technology

The topic of technology was an interesting one on many levels – with some brands exploring the hottest new trends, while others talked of a shift to disconnect from the online world and return to analogue. We found a seminar by IA (Interior Architects), hosted at Spacestor’s London Design Centre, incredibly insightful. Helena Keeling (Workplace strategist) and Carlotta Dove (Consumer experience director and head of humanX research) explored the impact of space on how we feel – highlighting key talking points around designing for belonging, fostering real human connections, and a desire to digitally detox.

5. Inspiring installations

A trip to CDW wouldn’t be the same without a visit to two of the most talked-about installations of the festival, so we went to check out Alex Chinneck’s surrealist sculpture, ‘A Week at the Knees’ – featuring 7,000 bricks displayed in such as way as to ‘defy the rigidity of the material’. And finally, there was nothing like stopping (for just a moment) to admire ‘Brick from a Stone: Arch Revival’ on Clerkenwell Green. It was a great display of strength, blending ancient techniques with 21st-century engineering – and a perfect meeting point, too!

With plenty of conversations to follow-up on, and a great evening at The Fence to close out this year’s event, we’re already looking forward to what 2026 has in store.

As one of the key people responsible for making sure everything runs smoothly on site, Carine Trang (construction manager) plays a crucial role in delivering projects on time, on budget, and to the highest standards. Known for her calm approach and adaptability, Carine thrives in the fast-paced world of fit-out – expertly balancing people, priorities and progress. So, let’s find out a little more about what makes her tick, in our latest Q&A...

Can you share a little bit about what you do, and the role you play in the delivery of Agilité’s projects?

As a construction manager, my main responsibility is to coordinate the site works – ensuring that everything aligns with the project plans and timelines, while staying compliant with regulations. I must be flexible and ready to adapt, whether it’s handling unexpected on-site issues, or managing the different people involved in the project. The ultimate goal is always to deliver a high-quality result, on time and with minimal complications.

How would you describe our organisation and the work we do to someone who had never heard of Agilité before?

Agilité is an international company that stands out for its flexibility and problem-solving approach. We adapt quickly to challenges and are solution-focused in everything we do. We also build strong, lasting relationships with our partners and clients, while prioritising environmental responsibility – something that truly differentiates us in the industry.

What has been your favourite Agilité project to work on so far?

It’s hard to choose just one, because every project is unique, with its own set of challenges, specificities, and dynamics between clients and subcontractors. But if I had to pick, I’d have to say an office project we completed in Luxembourg, for one of the world's oldest and largest investment management organisations. The level of coordination with both internal teams and the client was exceptional, and the attention to detail – especially with the furniture – made it a truly standout project to work on.

In your opinion, what makes Agilité stand out from the crowd? And how do you put your own stamp on that distinction?

It’s the quality of work, the diversity of experiences across the team, and our ability to adapt under pressure. We’re constantly learning from each other, sharing knowledge, and growing stronger as a result. Personally, I contribute by staying flexible, proactive, and focused on delivering projects with excellence, even in the face of unexpected changes on-site.

Describe a defining moment in your career, and how it has shaped the work you do at Agilité.

One defining moment was during my apprenticeship after finishing my studies. I was sent abroad to manage a major nursing home project, completely autonomously. Being trusted with such a big responsibility early on forced me to adapt quickly, take ownership, and really understand the impact of my decisions. That experience taught me the importance of initiative, attention to detail, and clear communication, all values that guide the way I work at Agilité today.

What excites you most about the future of Agilité? How do you see your role contributing to this vision?

Agilité is continuing to grow, both through new partnerships and by expanding our team. This growth is driven by the quality of our work and the strong relationships we build, and it allows us to keep improving client satisfaction. I see my role as key in supporting this growth by ensuring every project is delivered smoothly from a strong start to a snag-free finish that delights the client.

And finally, when you’re not at work, where are we most likely to find you?

Most likely at home, reading a book, or watching a drama on Netflix with my family taking a well-earned break!

Change is rarely comfortable, especially in an industry as complex and tradition-rooted as construction. But if there’s one thing we’ve learnt at Agilité, it’s that transformation doesn’t begin with technology. It begins with people. Recently, our design manager Matteo Bonotto was invited by Procore to join a thought-leadership panel at BIM World, Paris – and here are some of his key takeaways.

At Agilité, our ambition has always been to unify and scale our processes across multiple countries – to deliver consistency for clients and efficiency for our teams. But as we pushed forward with digitalisation of certain processes, we’re not ashamed to admit that we encountered a few roadblocks.

As with many organisations, initial resistance often comes down to a tension between company aspirations and day-to-day practicality. Colleagues understandably worry about disruption to workflows, increased workloads, and job security. Even among leadership, there can be concerns over the cost and operational impact of rolling out new platforms that have the potential to go underutilised.

Looking at BIM as an example, it has the potential to be perceived as a burden — another tool to learn, another layer of complexity. There can be doubts around compatibility with existing systems and how long might take before you see real results. But that also brings me to one of the biggest misconceptions with digital tools – immediate ROI without any need to rethink processes. In the case of BIM, it’s so much more than 3D modelling. In fact, it’s a collaborative, data-rich environment for better decision-making.

The turning point

So, what changed? Quite simply, proof.

A standout example was our recent fit-out of a 1,500 sqm high-end office space in La Défense, Paris. The client, a multinational organisation, challenged us to deliver a bold and innovative European HQ.

To meet this demand, we implemented cross-regional digital workflows that connected designers, project managers, subcontractors, and the client in real time. When teams witnessed real, tangible benefits — like a 30% reduction in rework due to BIM clash detection — they started to shift from scepticism to support. To ensure the successful delivery of the project, we connected cross-regional teams through digital workflows:

During this project, we learned that the key to adoption is involvement. When people are part of the process — helping select the tools, test them, and shape how they’re used — they move from feeling imposed upon to feeling empowered. The results spoke for themselves: fewer delays, clearer communication, and stronger alignment between stakeholders. What’s more, every team involved embraced the new way of working because they experienced direct benefits.

Practical strategies that worked

So how can we move from theory to execution? These are some of the methods that we have implemented across several different digital transformation processes, which have made a real difference:

And just as importantly, avoiding common pitfalls is key – launching too fast, ignoring user feedback, and failing to define success metrics. Change doesn’t stick unless you can show that it’s working.

If there’s one piece of advice I’d give anyone embarking on digital transformation in construction, it’s this: invest in people first.

Technology is only as powerful as the people who use it. When your teams feel heard and supported, they’ll help drive the change — not resist it. Co-create your strategy with those on the ground, celebrate progress, and ensure leadership is visible every step of the way.

At the end of the day, digital transformation isn’t about software. It’s about mindset. Empower your teams, align around a shared vision, and use technology as the enabler — not the goal.

If our employees are the heart and soul of our brand, then our head of communications Ruth is the voice... writing most of the words you see ‘out there’ in the world. So, now that she’s firmly part of the in-house team, we thought it was time we put her in the hotseat.

Hello Ruth! Firstly, tell us what inspired you to join the Agilité team?

I had worked with Agilité for five years, providing services through a communications agency, before making the move in-house in January 2025. Since the first time I met the Agilité team, I’ve been in awe of the incredible projects we work on, the calibre of our client-base, and the culture we work hard to uphold – joining as a full-time employee was a real ‘pinch me’ moment.

Can you share a little bit about what you do, and the role you play in the delivery of Agilité's projects?

I’m the person behind the screen, writing the majority of Agilité’s internal and external communications, as well as leading the wider PR and marketing strategy throughout Europe – getting to grips with what our local teams need, to support the wider business goals — and working closely with our operational excellence director, Kirsty. While I don’t physically deliver projects, I strive to build connections with our clients, consultants, and partners, to understand their experience of working with us and what we can do to keep improving.

How would you describe our organisation and the work we do to someone who had never heard of Agilité before?

We breathe new life into spaces for world-leading brands. It may be our tagline, but that’s exactly what we do – take existing spaces and make them fit-for-purpose for those people who are going to live and breathe them every single day.

What has been your favourite Agilité project to work on, to-date?

I genuinely love everything I do at Agilité, and it’s hard to pick one thing, but at a push I’d say delivering a roundtable alongside our UK country head, Daniel Hunt, last summer. It was incredibly rewarding to have a bunch of thought-leaders in a room and get their take on a pertinent topic. We took the discussion and created a whitepaper which condensed all the musings into a downloadable piece, too.

In your opinion, what makes Agilité stand out from the crowd? And how do you put your own stamp on that distinction?

I’d have to say our commitment to being a responsible business, evidenced through our B Corp certification. It’s not simply a policy, but a mindset that permeates all our actions and decision-making, which is quite humbling when you stop and consider the (positive) impact we have as a result. Recently, I’ve been lucky enough to travel to each of our European offices, speak to our clients, and attend conferences hosted by two of our charitable partners, and seeing our purpose and principles come to life has reaffirmed the fact that I made the right choice in joining the team.

Describe a defining moment in your career, and how it has shaped the work you do at Agilité?

I would have to credit this to my dad. He’s an architect specialising in the design of healthcare buildings – having worked on schemes for Derby and Pinderfields hospitals, as well as our local doctors’ surgery. Growing up, I would tag along to site visits with him, and he would explain the rationale behind some of the design decisions he made – with a real focus on mental health and making hospitals a less stressful place to be, when you’re already likely feeling uncomfortable just being there. While I didn’t have the creative vision to be an architect and take over his practice (my creativity is firmly in the world of words), it clearly gave me a latent interest in architecture which bubbled back up to the surface the moment I started working with Agilité and another former client of mine, Reid Brewin Architects.

If a dream client were to call, who would it be and why?

Neom Wellbeing. Based not far from me in Harrogate and a fellow B Corp, I’m a huge Neom fan and have one of its wellbeing pods on constantly when I’m at home. The brand does so much community engagement too, and I’d love for us to work on an exciting store or pop-up shop.

What one piece of advice would you give to a client looking to expand into a new country, drawing from your experiences and expertise?

Speak to one of our experts. My colleagues are incredible at what they do, and I’m lucky enough to interview lots of our clients post-project, to gather their feedback from an objective point of view. The level of positive comments I hear about our teams’ attitude and approach to everything – from value engineering to problem-solving – is superb, and with that, I know you’ll be in safe hands.

What excites you most about the future of Agilité? How do you see your role contributing to this vision?

Our growth. The company has expanded massively since I first met Kirsty and Neil in 2020, and we have big plans for the year(s) ahead too. I’ve joined at a time where I can support the evolution of the brand as we continue to explore new countries and welcome new colleagues. Now that I’m here, I can help to make sure we don’t lose sight of what our brand represents – beyond the colour palette and tone of voice – when it comes to internal and external communication with all stakeholders.

In what ways do you envision Agilité continuing to lead the way in sustainable practices within the construction industry? How do you personally align with Agilité's sustainability values?

Being a B Corp means we have access to a huge pool of like-minded organisations and people to help us continue to push the envelope. Only yesterday I joined a B Hive UK event around employee engagement and left brimming with ideas. I think one thing that made me nervous about switching from a communications agency to an in-house role was the thought that I’d have less people around me to bounce ideas around, but the reality is quite the opposite – I now have the space to collaborate with inspiring brands and people, without worrying about using too much of the client’s retainer time.

What industry changes or trends do you think will have the biggest impact on our sector over the coming year?

It’s been said before, but absolutely it’s all-things-AI. We’ve established a working group internally at Agilité, to define best-practice and agree what tools we should be moving forward with – not just for our own benefit, but in line with our ISO certifications too. I’m looking forward to attending my first meeting and getting stuck in. And no, this blog wasn’t written by Chat GPT!

Finally, when you’re not at work, where are we most likely to find you?

B Corp month: profiling some of our responsible partners

They say, ‘no man is an island’ and we firmly believe that sentiment applies when it comes to operating responsibly as a business – which is why we try to surround ourselves with like-minded partners whenever we can. As B Corp month draws to a close, we’re handing over our final blog of the campaign to some of our friends that are leading by example.

First up, let’s meet charity:water, a non-profit organisation committed to bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in 22 countries low on the UN Human Development Index.

Water changes everything...

charity: water is focused on solving the global water crisis by providing sustainable water sources to communities that need it the most. Their mission is to not only give people access to clean water but to ensure these solutions are long-lasting – leveraging innovative technologies and partnerships to make clean water accessible to everyone, everywhere. Through its commitment to transparency, charity:water shows donors exactly where their money goes, providing updates on every water project they fund and its ongoing impact.

Agilité is proud to have partnered with charity: water since 2022 to help further this important mission. Agilité’s first donation in 2022 funded a project in Madagascar, where piped water systems were installed to serve 251 people! Motivated by the positive impact, Agilité committed to a three-year ambition to bring clean water to an additional 1,500 people. Two live projects are currently underway, with a 2023 initiative set to benefit Cambodia and Uganda by the end of 2025. Looking ahead, Agilité’s 2024 donation will impact 600 people across communities in Malawi and Ethiopia, continuing our dedication to improving access to clean water for vulnerable populations around the world.

Earlier this year, Agilité’s Kirsty Shearer (OpEx director), Scott Tortosa (sustainability coordinator) and Ruth Harrison-Davies (head of communications) joined the annual charity:water conference in London, and left feeling inspired, humbled and with a new addition to their reading list... founder Scott Harrison’s book, Thirst

Next, meet the team helping to preserve the world’s mangroves

Mangrove Action Project (MAP) was founded in 1992 with a mission to tackle the alarming loss of mangrove forests around the globe. Fast-forward to today, and MAP is a leading environmental organisation focused on preventing mangrove destruction and promoting effective ecosystem restoration. The team provide hands-on workshops, virtual training and expert consultations around the world to equip land managers and restoration practitioners with the knowledge and tools they need to ensure reforestation projects succeed. And, through unique Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR) approach, the team helps to ensure long-term ecological and social resilience.

Agilité has been a supporter of MAP for several years now, and caught up with Laura Mitchie, (MAP programme manager and restoration trainer) to find out what the team was busy working on: “We are currently in Bangladesh, working in the Sundarbans mangrove forest - the largest mangrove ecosystem in the world.

“We’re collaborating with our local partner BEDS (Bangladesh Environment and Development Society) to conduct a Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR) workshop. We are also preparing for a youth education program that we plan to return and deliver next year, aimed at engaging younger generations in mangrove conservation. As a small token of our appreciation, we have filmed a short video to give you a glimpse into the important work your support is making possible.”

That’s a Wrap: Celebrating Our B Corp Month Partners

As B Corp Month comes to a close, we’re proud to highlight our partners creating real impact—from clean water initiatives to sustainable infrastructure.

The evolution of corporate architecture has been significant, adapting to the demands of an office market that demands sustainability and efficiency. What companies request today goes far beyond functional buildings, they are looking for – and need – spaces they can identify with and which show their commitment to both the environment and the wellbeing of their team.

But how did we get here, and what does it really mean to have a ‘high performance’ building? In our latest guest blog, TTS The Tenant Solution takes a closer look...

Corporate architecture in today's context

Until fairly recently, you could be forgiven for thinking most offices were offices were dull, closed spaces with endless rows of desks, little natural light – and even less character. In response came open-plan spaces – encouraging collaboration and flexibility among the team. Now, as the trend continues, we are going even further.

Take a recent project from Parella España as an example. The team has remodelled several floors of the Agbar Tower in Barcelona for a technology company. The project included the creation of flexible spaces and socialising areas for employees, technological upgrades and the use of sustainable materials.

It sounds good, but implementing these changes is not easy and brings its own challenges.

The fact is that today's technological evolution, coupled with changing employee expectations, force companies to innovate all the time if they want to be competitive. But how do we integrate sustainability into this picture?

Sustainability in corporate architecture

When we mention sustainability in architecture, we quickly think of designs that reduce or mitigate environmental impact and promote human well-being. But sustainability is not just about incorporating solar panels or recycling materials, it is a philosophy that influences every decision in the design and operational process.

Embrace ecological materials by using recycled or sustainably sourced materials to reduce the ecological footprint of your building. For example, the Iberdrola Tower in Bilbao used recycled materials in its construction and stands out for its energy-saving capacity thanks to the amount of natural light it receives, reducing the need for electricity.

Introducing systems that reduce office consumption, such as LED lighting, quality thermal insulation, and renewable energy solutions reduces dependence on fossil fuels while achieving considerable savings in the long term – including lower operating costs, improved corporate image, and fulfilling your obligations around social responsibility.

What is high performance in corporate buildings?

When we talk about ‘high performance’ buildings, they are structures designed to optimise resources and maximise functionality. But what does this mean in practice?

A clear example of high-performance corporate architecture is the One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) in New York. The building's sustainable design strategies – including water and energy efficiency – exceed the criteria for LEED CS Gold certification. The tower features an advanced smart management system that optimises energy consumption and indoor air quality, using data collected by thousands of sensors.

The integration of emerging technologies is key to this process. Automation systems that adjust lighting and climate control according to occupancy, smart materials that react to environmental conditions and electric mobility solutions are some of the innovations that are shaping the future of corporate architecture.

What is the impact on brand identity and business?

A sustainable, high-performance office goes beyond its physical structure; it is a statement of principles. On the one hand it demonstrates the company's values to the market and on the other hand it becomes an important differentiating element.

Customers and employees view companies that prioritise their commitment to the environment and the well-being of their employees in a positive light, and we know that well-designed spaces increase productivity, improve job satisfaction and can reduce costs in the long run. In addition, adopting sustainable practices can open up new business opportunities, attract talent and strengthen customer loyalty.

So, transforming corporate architecture is not just a trend, it’s a necessity.

And that's why companies around the world are adopting more efficient, sustainable and adaptable spaces to enhance their teams' experience and reinforce their brand identity. If you're looking to integrate sustainability and high performance into your workspace, now is the time to act. In an industry often scrutinised for its environmental impact, Agilité was founded with the ambition of bringing about positive change from within the construction sector. Our purpose from day one was to maximise customer experience while minimising negative impact, and it’s this sentiment that drove us to seek B Corp certification and commit to doing business responsibly.

As we’re halfway through B Corp month 2025, we spoke to our operational excellence director, Kirsty Shearer – one of Agilité’s founders, and the driving force behind our B Corp certification – to find out what it means to be a part of this forward-thinking collective, and a part of Generation B.

When Agilité was established in 2018, the vision was clear: to create a company that prioritised both customer satisfaction and environmental and societal stewardship. With a small team, allying everyone to this vision was straightforward. However, as we expanded across Europe, it became more challenging – as each country we work in has its own standards for societal and environmental responsibility.

In 2019, we began exploring potential certifications to formalise Agilité’s commitment to responsible business practices – but it was hard to find something that covered all elements of ESG. B Corp was the only framework that comprehensively addressed the company's goals – although admittedly it felt like a real mountain to climb.

Partnering with B Corp consultancy, A Beautiful Green, we conducted a thorough assessment of our performance across five key areas – governance, workers, community, environment, and customers – to establish a baseline, and therefore a foundation for measuring, managing, and improving the company's social and environmental impact.

The actual journey to B Corp certification was a rigorous one, requiring two years of dedicated effort to ensure Agilité's long-term vision and values truly aligned with its outward actions – a process that involved making changes on both micro and macro levels.

In December 2023, Agilité proudly earned its B Corp certification, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards responsible business practices. But the work doesn’t stop there. In fact, we’re already starting to think about our recertification in 2026.

The knowledge gained during the certification process has empowered us to implement responsible practices throughout everything we do. Since the certification, I’ve moved into the role of operational excellence director, and it’s my job to ensure we keep our purpose front-and-centre as we continue to grow. I’m building a team across key areas of sustainability, quality, health and safety, operations, IT, governance, and communications to ensure we continue ‘walking the walk’.

We’re working hard to surround ourselves with like-minded partners too, and Agilité's commitment to sustainability extends beyond its projects to its entire supply chain. Our responsible purchasing programme seeks partners who share our long-term guiding principles and, by leveraging data-driven decision-making tools like Airtable, we’re able to track regulatory compliance, performance and sustainability scores to ensure we’re working with the right people.

With an exciting pipeline of projects in new geographies and collaborations with innovative clients, supply chain engagement is a real priority. Last year, we piloted supplier forums in the UK and it’s something we’re looking to roll-out across each of our locations in 2025. Bringing our partners along with us on the journey is really important, and exactly what this year’s B Corp month theme of ‘Generation B’ is about.

Longer-term, we’re aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and are working with Neutral Carbon Zone (NCZ) to monitor, report on, and reduce emissions across our entire value chain. Currently a gold-certified member of the NCZ Certification Programme, Agilité is striving for platinum certification.

I may be biased, but I truly believe that by continuously raising its standards and embracing innovative practices, Agilité remains – as it always has been – dedicated to creating a better tomorrow for people, the environment, and the global community.

Agilité, a leading European general contractor and certified B Corp has appointed Sara Purvis as country head for its German division. Based in Berlin, Sara will spearhead the company’s strategic growth throughout the country – overseeing operations, business development and the continued delivery of excellence across its corporate office, retail and hospitality projects.

This appointment reflects Agilité’s commitment to bolstering its presence in Germany, with multiple projects delivered in the country already – including General Motors’ Cadillac City showrooms in Hamburg and Frankfurt, Lululemon’s Leipzig store, Big Mamma’s Hamburg trattoria and a retail roll-out for global sports brand, Fanatics covering NBA and Lids stores in Berlin, Dresden and Alstertal.

Formerly divisional director at ISG, Sara brings over 25 years’ experience in developing projects – particularly within the commercial office and retail sectors – and, as opportunities grow, Sara is actively recruiting for project and construction managers to bolster the existing team.

“I am delighted to join Agilité and lead the German division – particularly in terms of working alongside some familiar faces,” says Sara. “It’s been hard to ignore Agilité’s rapid expansion across Europe over the past seven years, and I really am looking forward to being a part of the next phase of growth.

“My experience and network here in Germany will hopefully allow us to leverage the numerous opportunities on offer across the country. It’s been a busy start, and I look forward to meeting the rest of the team and building upon what is already an innovative, responsible and pioneering organisation.”

Sara’s background encompasses a diverse portfolio of projects including office, hotels, residential properties, healthcare and neighbourhood development throughout Germany, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and UK. This European experience will prove pivotal as she works closely with fellow country heads – Galia Minkara (France), Daniel Hunt (UK), Andrew Zacharias (Luxembourg) and Maria Luisa Daglia (Italy) as well as European operations directors Cormac O’Sullivan and Louis Gilbert – to establish best-practice and growth opportunities throughout the continent.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Sara, to Agilité. Her proven track record includes heading up the Berlin team at ISG and successfully leading The Office Group’s market entry into Germany alongside multiple projects across key cities,” explains Neil Coales, Agilité’s managing director. “We’ve been operating in Germany for several years now, and Sara’s deep understanding of the local market is exactly what we need to drive our expansion in the country – a key market for our European growth strategy.”

Across Europe, Agilité has experienced unprecedented growth since its inception in January 2018 – delivering office, retail and hospitality projects in over 12 countries for clients that include Hogan Lovells, Eurostar, The Social Hub, Costco Wholesale and LVMH.

It’s no secret that our colleagues are our ‘secret sauce’ here at Agilité, and one of our long-serving senior project managers, Sébastien Flambard knows the ‘recipe’ to a good project delivery – particularly when it comes to luxury retail and high-end hospitality sites. So, let’s find out a little more about what makes him tick...

Hello Seb! Firstly, tell us what inspired you to join the Agilité team?

What inspired me to join the Agilité team was the company’s dynamic and international approach to project management. With a strong focus on high-quality renovations in the retail and hospitality sectors, Agilité perfectly aligns with my passion for delivering exceptional spaces that enhance customer experiences. I was also drawn to the company’s collaborative culture and its commitment to innovation, efficiency, and client satisfaction. Being part of a team that values expertise and adaptability in fast-paced environments was a key factor in my decision to join Agilité.

Can you share a little bit about what you do, and the role you play in the delivery of Agilité's projects?

As a senior project manager leading retail and hospitality projects at Agilité, I am responsible for ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standard. My role involves coordinating with clients, architects, contractors, and suppliers to manage every phase of the project – from initial planning to final handover – meaning I focus on streamlining processes, mitigating risks, and ensuring seamless execution to meet our clients’ expectations.

A key part of my role is also managing and collaborating with our talented internal teams. Their expertise, dedication, and adaptability are essential to the success of each project, and I strive to foster a dynamic and supportive work environment that enables them to excel.

Beyond project execution, I place great emphasis on building and maintaining strong, strategic relationships with our clients and partners. Understanding their needs, anticipating challenges, and providing tailored solutions are crucial to ensuring long-term success. At Agilité, we are not just delivering projects – we are creating lasting partnerships based on trust, transparency, and a shared vision of excellence.

How would you describe our organisation and the work we do to someone who had never heard of Agilité before?

Agilité is a dynamic, international company specialising in the design and delivery of high-quality construction and renovation projects, particularly in the retail, hospitality, and corporate sectors. We provide end-to-end project management services, ensuring that every space we create is functional, aesthetically refined, and tailored to our clients’ needs.

What truly sets Agilité apart is our ability to operate across multiple countries with a seamless and agile approach – adapting to local regulations, cultures, and market conditions. We work closely with our clients, partners, and internal teams to deliver projects efficiently, on time, and within budget, all while maintaining the highest standards of quality and sustainability.

At its core, Agilité is more than just a construction company – we are a trusted partner, committed to bringing our clients’ vision to life through innovation, collaboration, and strategic expertise.

What has been your favourite Agilité project to work on, to-date?

Choosing a favourite project is challenging because each one brings its own unique set of opportunities and complexities. However, I particularly enjoy working on projects that present a real challenge – whether it’s a tight deadline, complex logistics, or high technical requirements. This year, some of my favourite projects have been for Nike, General Motors, Eurostar, and Pratesi, each of which required a high level of coordination, problem-solving, and adaptability – making them both demanding and incredibly rewarding.

Beyond technical challenges, I also have a strong preference for projects where the relationship with the client and partners is based on trust, transparency, and a shared vision. A healthy and constructive collaboration always leads to better outcomes, and I find it incredibly satisfying to work alongside teams who value open communication and a positive dynamic. These projects were perfect examples of Agilité’s ability to adapt, innovate, and build strong, lasting relationships with our clients.

In your opinion, what makes Agilité stand out from the crowd? And how do you put your own stamp on that distinction?

Agilité stands out from the crowd thanks to its ability to combine international reach, flexibility, and a client-focused approach. We are not just a construction company – we are a trusted partner that adapts to each project’s unique challenges, whether it’s navigating complex regulations across different countries, managing fast-track timelines, or delivering high-end finishes for demanding clients. Our agility, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence set us apart in the industry.

Beyond operational excellence, Agilité is also actively positioning itself as a leader in sustainable construction and environmental responsibility. With our B Corp certification journey, we are integrating more sustainable practices into our processes, reducing our environmental impact, and driving meaningful change within the industry.

I put my own stamp on that distinction by embracing complex projects and fostering strong, transparent relationships with clients and partners. I believe that a successful project is built on trust, collaboration, and a shared vision, which is why I always strive to create a positive and solution-oriented environment. By anticipating challenges, ensuring seamless coordination between stakeholders, and maintaining high-quality standards, I contribute to Agilité’s reputation for delivering outstanding results and long-term partnerships – with sustainability at the core of our approach.

Describe a defining moment in your career, and how it has shaped the work you do at Agilité?

Rather than a single defining moment, I believe it is the multiplicity of projects I have worked on that has shaped my career. Each project brings its own unique challenges, requiring adaptability, problem-solving, and continuous learning. Over time, this diversity has allowed me to refine my approach, anticipate challenges more effectively, and develop a strong ability to lead complex renovations with confidence.

One key lesson I have learned is the importance of staying calm under pressure. Experience has taught me that challenges are inevitable but maintaining a composed and solution-oriented mindset is crucial to overcoming them efficiently. This ability to navigate high-pressure situations with clarity and focus has been instrumental in driving successful project outcomes.

Beyond the projects themselves, what truly drives me is the quality of the teams I work with and the opportunity to mentor and support young professionals. Seeing talented colleagues grow and develop is incredibly rewarding. At Agilité, we place great emphasis on collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and empowering the next generation of industry leaders. This commitment to people and continuous improvement is what makes my role so fulfilling and keeps me motivated every day.

If a dream client were to call, who would it be and why?

For me, the dream client is the one who truly needs us – where our expertise, adaptability, and problem-solving skills can make a real difference. I find the most satisfaction in projects where Agilité’s added value is clear, whether it’s navigating complex logistics, delivering high-end finishes under tight deadlines, or managing multi-country rollouts with seamless execution.

More than just a well-known brand, the ideal client is one who values collaboration, trusts our guidance, and sees us as a strategic partner rather than just a service provider. Those are the projects that are the most rewarding, where we can truly bring our expertise to the table and create something exceptional together.

What one piece of advice would you give to a client looking to expand into a new country, drawing from your experiences and expertise?

Expanding into a new country is an exciting opportunity, but it comes with a unique set of challenges – from regulatory requirements to cultural differences and logistical complexities. My key piece of advice to any client embarking on this journey would be: ‘surround yourself with the right local expertise from day one’.

Every market has its own nuances, and having a trusted partner who understands the local landscape – permitting processes, supply chains, construction standards, and cultural expectations – can make all the difference. At Agilité, we specialise in helping brands navigate these complexities seamlessly, ensuring that projects are delivered efficiently, on time, and to the highest quality standards.

A well-planned expansion is not just about replicating a concept in a new location; it’s about adapting intelligently while maintaining brand identity and operational excellence. With the right team and a strategic approach, the process can be smoother, more cost-effective, and ultimately, more successful.

What excites you most about the future of Agilité? How do you see your role contributing to this vision?

What excites me most about Agilité’s future is our continuous growth and commitment to excellence, sustainability, and strong partnerships. As we expand into new markets, we are reinforcing our position as a trusted, forward-thinking partner, with a focus on building long-term relationships and driving repeat business.

My role is to contribute to this vision by ensuring seamless project delivery, fostering a strong team dynamic, and mentoring young talent. I look forward to tackling new challenges, strengthening client relationships, and helping Agilité continue to stand out in the industry.

In what ways do you envision Agilité continuing to lead the way in sustainable practices within the construction industry? How do you personally align with Agilité's sustainability values?

Agilité leads the way in sustainable construction by integrating responsible solutions, reducing our carbon footprint, and pursuing B Corp certification. We prioritise responsible sourcing, waste reduction, and energy-efficient designs to drive real change in the industry. On a personal level, I align with these values by considering sustainability in every project decision and making responsible choices for the future, not just for us, but for my son too.

What industry changes or trends do you think will have the biggest impact on our sector over the coming year?

Sustainability will be a key driver, with stricter regulations and a push for low-carbon materials and energy-efficient solutions. Digitalisation and AI will enhance project efficiency, while supply chain challenges will demand greater adaptability. At Agilité, we embrace these changes by refining our processes, integrating sustainable solutions, and leveraging technology to stay agile in a fast-evolving market.

And finally, when you’re not at work, where are we most likely to find you?

At the beach, surfing – much to my wife’s dismay! 😄🏄‍♂️

Something we’re really proud of at Agilité is our commitment to aligning our purpose with our actions. We consciously make an effort to operate ethically and sustainably – whether that’s reducing our carbon footprint or looking at ways to support local communities – and are dedicated to making a tangible difference.

As a certified B Corp, we belong to a community of for-profit companies committed to redefining success in business. But, the B Corp Certification is more than a mark – it’s a way of seeing the world – and leading for good.

Today marks the start of B Corp month, and the global campaign message for 2025 centres around ‘Generation B’ – capturing the attitude of change to show audiences how we’re creating a better future, today. This year’s campaign manifesto states:

It’s something that resonates well with our European organisation – particularly within our young workforce which genuinely cares about the world around them, and the legacy they’ll eventually leave behind. With eight locations throughout the continent, we strive to collaborate with local B Corps wherever possible – be it as a construction partner or supplier, through to catering our events and printing business cards.

Throughout the month, our teams in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain, the Netherlands and UK will be marking the occasion with several local initiatives. As a company, we’ll also be taking part in a ‘digital clean-up’ – a globally-recognised event marked on 15 March – in a bid to improve our collective digital hygiene skills so that we can reduce wasteful digital practices.
